Barry Challis is a highly qualified and
experienced employment expert with extensive experience of the labour market including
recruitment, human resource development, small business development, careers assessment
and guidance, and employment rehabilitation.
In addition to providing expert reports in PI,
Clinical and Professional Negligence cases, and for Employment Tribunals he undertakes
employment rehabilitation work.
Mr Challis provides expert evidence in a wide range
of cases. These include high value cases including where injury took place early in life
and where his experience of vocational assessment with young people is particularly
useful. Other instructions have involved work on cerebral palsy, erbs palsy and brain
injury cases and on cases involving work related stress.
He also provides well researched factual information
reports where expert evidence is not required.
Mr Challis accepts expert and employment
rehabilitation instructions from all parts of the UK from Claimant and Defendant
Solicitors and Insurers, and increasingly as a Single Joint Expert. He has consulting
rooms in Sheffield, Manchester and Plymouth and has provided expert reports for litigation
being pursued in courts in Australia, Cyprus, the USA and Ireland.
He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute
of Personnel and Development, a Member of the Academy of Experts, a Member of the
Vocational Rehabilitation Association and has a Master of Science Degree in Business
Development.
Mr Challis has been APIL, Law
Society, Scottish Law Society and Academy of Experts Accredited, and is trained and
experienced in giving evidence in the High Court.
Mr Challis spent his early career as a Labour Market
Intelligence Advisor for companies re-locating in Devon and Cornwall and as a schools
careers advisor. He later managed the Department of Employment Adult Occupational Guidance
Service in East and West Sussex and managed three large jobcentres on the South Coast and
disablement resettlement staff.
He subsequently held senior management positions in
the Head Offices of the Manpower Services Commission, the Employment Department, the
Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for Education and Employment.
These different positions involved providing policy
advice to Ministers, and directing, reviewing and marketing major national training and
work experience programmes for the unemployed, young people, the disabled and small
business proprietors.
Mr Challis was the last national Head of The Small
Firms Service, which provided business advice to 50,000 business start ups and small firms
a year, and he directed the transfer of the Service into the private sector. Latterly he
was responsible for the management of training and development for the staff of government
departments. He has also been the Chairman of the Trustees of a Registered Charity,
supporting young people with communication and learning difficulties in their transition
into the world of work.
